GA State Championship and Banquet - Observations of a Novice. posted on 08 November 2004.

Preparation: Alex Gore leads Jeff Dein
The rain stopped at midday on Thursday. Larry dug a trench on the 3rd straight to lower the water level on turn 2 and gain access to the blocked drain. Volunteers worked on the areas they could and went home wondering if we would have the track ready in time.
Friday was sunny and windy, volunteers came and went throughout the day and into the night - the track was groomed and ready for some serious racing!

Saturday:
The big day arrived, the track was marked, the sponsors banners were hung up, the concession stand was fully stocked and Josie's famous fried rice was ready.
We had over 104 riders registered for the championships, 3 Open class races, a MTB four-cross race, AND a boxer-short relay race. Frank and Alisha on the starting hill

Racing highlights:
In the 10-and-under Open main, Tevin Wright got an incredible gate-start and lead from start to finish.
In the MTB main, going into the first turn, Alex Gore blasted through a gap between 2 riders and carved through the turn into the lead.
In the boxer-short relay race main, Tom Harper performed a tabletop jump and fell just before the finish line. (He says his handlebars got hooked up in his jersey, I swear it was the boxer-shorts!) Anyway, Tom slid over the finish line, destroyed front wheel and boxer-shorts in tatters and was declared the winner!
David Goen won the bike raffle, smile David, those are Profile cranks! We had a ton of raffle prizes (I think the only people that didn’t' win anything, did not buy a ticket.) David Goen won the K2 BMX bike from Bicycles Unlimited. All the younger riders received a "goodie-bag" after the third round of racing. Our mayor, Steve Brown started the first race - thank you, Sir! (I was hoping the mayor or one of his daughters would need to use the bathroom, and I would have to point out the porta-potties, but no such luck!) All in all, it was a long day, but I think everyone enjoyed themselves.

Sunday:
Partners Pizza catered - mmm, pizza good. Pat would not miss the banquet and prize-giving
GA state BMX officials elected for 2005: Carolyn Grant, Rob Potter, Robbie Metz and Bert Horton. Thanks to Sonny and Lauren Hines, and Tim Maret for their many years of service to GA BMX - we hope to see you all out there riding/racing!
Everyone was pleased to see Pat McClellan at the banquet, he fell in his third moto and broke his ankle (in 3 places) Pat was wearing his usual happy smile, but was had wisely accessorized his ensemble with crutches and plaster cast! Pat, we hope you heal up fast.
Trophy winners were presented with a LARGE trophy, numberplate, a backpack and the GA state jersey to be worn at the President's Cup in Florida.

It was also made official, Augusta has been awarded a Regional race in 2005, McDonough the Regional Championships in 2005.
PTC was disappointed that we did not get a Regional race in 2005 - however we are pleased that the state of GA retained both the SE Regional and the SE Regional Champs races. The PTC BMX committee is committed to improving our facilities, and working with our city so that the NBL cannot deny us!

PTC riders look forward to the President's Cup

I have a feeling that 2005 is going to be even more successful than 2004 for BMX, and specifically GA BMX !
See you at the President's Cup.
